Primrose is a sweet natured little bear that enchants everyone she meets with her gentle smile and sunny disposition.
Happiest when outdoors she delights in being close to nature but is particularly happy when she spots the delicate yellow blooms of her namesake flower, the Primrose, as she knows it is the surest sign that spring is on the way, bringing with it the promise of good things ahead.
Here at the Railway Station we like to be sure that any of our bears that would like to explore the world beyond the Bear Room are well prepared for their adventures. When we realized just how much Primrose loved to be outdoors we wanted to be sure that she would be snuggly and warm on her wanders and so created a beautifully soft yellow *Hap especially for her. Made from **Shetland wool and hand dyed using a natural plant dye derived from ***Weld grown at the station, the Hap was hand knitted, in miniature, from an authentic Shetland Hap pattern.
We think Primrose looks like a very happy - and cosy - little bear !
*Hap - meaning to cover, wrap or keep warm and used to describe the traditional everyday wear of Shetland women
**A very important characteristic of Shetland Sheep is their beautiful wool, upon which the world-renowned Shetland wool industry was built. Traditionally, the finest of the Shetland yarns, spun from selected neck wool, were knit into lace shawls so fine they could be drawn through a wedding ring!
***Weld plant is also known as Dyer’s Rocket. The bright yellow dye has been used as a fabric dye and oil paint colorant since Roman times.
